Buddy Sketch 7-27-20

Been itching to draw all day. Finally caught Buddy napping for a few minutes. Being amidst a whirlwind of and intersession class, this was a much needed break.

Side note, my leg fell asleep and the middle of my back is sore as can be... Totally worth every second!

Before the Session

This was a fun one. I hated those sheers when she first put them up. But they've made it into a number of studies. It was tough trying to decide just how much to let you see into the silhouette of the lamp. I think it came out pretty well in the end.

Finally getting to the guest room so I can get a more practical workspace into the studio... It seems all my classes are going to be online for now; even the drawing classes. I guess I'll have to learn as I go since I have yet to partake in any of the zoom sessions people have been hosting.

Some of the new furniture has been here for a while taking up valuable space. With no one around to help, It'll come up one piece at a time... ha ha

Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend!

Throwback Thursday

A peeled orange for you today. An older still life study I unearthed cleaning the studio. Been spending a lot of time working around the house when I don't have time or energy to paint. Which has been pretty often of late. Its been cathartic. It's amazing the sheer amount of stuff that piles up over the years. Been nice to accomplish some of the things I've been putting off... Really just to de-clutter and rearrange my spaces. It has let me breathe again! The whole process has slowly but surely been relieving much of my stress.

A fun little gouache study today. The weather was too nice to pass up! Really should have been working on homework... But I'm glad I took the time.

I had pretty much cleaned up by the time I thought of it... Below is a picture of my set up. Close to noon by then.

Huddle Study

Couldn't sleep. Was trying to organize my files... and look for inspiration. You never know when you'll find a gem you missed!

Anyways, stumbled on this quick sketch from a number of years ago. Was meant to be one of the main figure groups...

A fun find

I was working on the downstairs painting area... aka the basement. Found a bunch of old paintings stored in shirt boxes. I thought they were empty. Anyway, I remember this painting being particularly fun! At the time I was surprised just how much color I found in such a seemingly simple subject. I anticipated doing a small series... It did lead to one other painting that sold long ago. Brought me right back though! Fun stuff!

A tentative first layer

A tentative first layer. Camera on my phone picks up too much yellow. I think you'll get the idea.

Needed a warm up to get back into a few pieces that have been sitting. After months of being just plain exhausted, I feel pretty good the last few days. Maybe I just needed time to decompress... Maybe life and my body has been telling me to slow down?  I don't know, but I'll take it.

Fun to dive in though! I haven't put out this full of a palette in a long time!

A Narcissus from today

I hope this finds you all safe and healthy. This is the first time I've picked up a brush since this all began. A quick study of a Narcissus.

Said to symbolize rebirth, renewal and the coming of spring. Seemed a fitting time to paint one. Three yellows used in this one, cad yellow light, yellow ochre and lemon yellow hue. These flowers have brightened my days of late. I've done a few studies of them and they've each been a great escape.

I hope it will bring you a moment away too.

Friday's First Pose

This was the first pose from Friday's session. Had to break from the Zorn palette to get that yellow.... haha. Again tried to approach this more as a composition.

A Morning in awe!

Not gonna lie... This was hard!

The camera overdoes the saturation I see. Still wish I had a bigger palette.

What an amazing way to spend a morning! Quite literally at the feet of a master! After William-Adolphe Bouguereau!

If you know what painting this was from, please let me know... This image was from a series of details posted by @_artzoom_

Hallway Sketch 1

Been reading the last few days.  Online courses really bog you down with text!

Felt great to jusy relax for a late night sketch. Clear my head!  Been trying to figure out how to add a figure in this... Maybe take a higher view point?

Instagram cropped it a little no matter what I did.

Sketchbook assignment

A sketchbook assignment from a class I'm taking...  Weird to be drawing on white paper again and not really working with a whole space.

It was tricky to keep the same head tilt and angle looking back and forth.  Fun stuff though!  Great to just show up and see what happens sometimes!

Bud Vase and Walnut with Rose

In keeping with my post vacation boot camp.  Another bud vase.  Haven't painted a walnut in years... They always remind me of little brains.  I swear the rose is just the slightest bit green too.  I guess that's what she meant when she said we kind of have white sprays available...

More soon.

Buffalo Creek Bridge Study

Well this one almost never happened. I went by this spot early in the day and was unhappy with the light... So I started scouting out new places to paint waaay north. It started pouring so I headed back home. By the time I got back the rain had cleared, but I was exhausted!

Came in had a couple cups of coffee, and forced myself out the door to check on it again. I liked the light, and there wasn't too much standing water. So I set up and painted...

Getting everything back to the car in the wind was tricky, but I made it. Proceeded to tuck the painting away safely and got in the car... I reached back for a paper towel for one last wipe of the hands. Turned out they blew out of the car! A whole brand new roll was flowing across the parking lot. In a huff I managed to bundle them all back up... So now I'll be using the bundle around the studio... It's always and experience dealing with nature.

Buffalo Creek Study

A quick study of a bush and some wildflowers from Buffalo Creek forest preserve. They've had the park shut down since the middle of last year. There's still only a couple of paths open. But I was lucky enough to stumble upon this bush. Thought it would make for a nice composition with the wild flowers.

I'll go back and explore the ponds and bridges later this year. When I have more energy. But, it was fun seeing what may be in-store for this park. It's just a quick drive away and always full of fisherman, walkers and bikers...

84 - Willow off Route 60

I went into work early today so I could try to get a painting in. Another quick sketch of the Weeping Willow by the Rustoleum building off route 60. This was fun! Completely different than it was in the fall... See here.

And this time I had some company. This big fella was no more than 10 feet away for the whole time. I watched him catch a little sunfish! Maybe some inspiration for a rainy day...
See it in the store.

Another quick value study.  Want to get these down before the bulbs burn out!

Ma surprised me by taking a day off to go see the Bouguereau exhibit in Milwaukee!  (Bouguereau and America)  How exciting!  I may finally get to see on of my favorite paintings of his!?!  Don't want to jinx it... as I passed it twice on an east coast tour a number of years ago...
