8-13-21 - Ray Lake Forest Preserve

Managed to sneak a painting in before work today. I was setup before 7 and ready to go. The sky lightened and grayed as the sun rose. I chased it at times. There was some really intriguing colors, I did my best to capture the mood.

When I got to work the power was out. We were trying to figure out how to work under the emergency lights when it came back on. Only about half an hour lost... Ha! If that's all Friday the 13th had for us... Now, now. I don't want to get too carried away and press my luck.

Just for good measure a shot of my view and setup part way through. I've really enjoyed this cigar box pochade... It's an almost unaltered Acid brand box. If anybody should be interested, I've stashed a few away.

8-12-21 - McHenry Dam

Today things started off a bit haphazardly. I headed out the wrong direction just to get through the traffic. (Everything around here is under construction.) Having been forced another direction, I ended up changing my intended spot and went to the dam. Turned out I forgot to transfer my panels back to my usual bag. So gouache it was for this morning! It turned out to be a nice morning. Couldn't have planned it better..

Below is a shot of my view. Taken after I had pretty much packed up... Thanks for looking! Have a great weekend!

07/01/2021 - Willow Stream

After a week of rain, I was able to get out for a little bit this morning. This is a view of Willow Stream Park, right by the house. The water level was higher than I expected, so I changed a little from my planned composition. This park gets a lot of foot traffic! I avoided too much conversation by just hanging out the side door of the minivan as I painted... It is such a wonderful day out. Maybe I'll be able to get out for a little later today or this weekend.

Hope you all enjoy the holiday weekend! As always, thanks for looking!

Now that the spring semester is in the books, things are starting to settle down. I'm getting into some sort of schedule anyways. I've been eyeing this tree for a while. It is just a few minutes from the house. I was able to find a nice spot in a lot where I could paint from the car. (It's been oddly hot here for spring.)

Hope you enjoy it! Have a great weekend!

84 - Willow off Route 60

I went into work early today so I could try to get a painting in. Another quick sketch of the Weeping Willow by the Rustoleum building off route 60. This was fun! Completely different than it was in the fall... See here.

And this time I had some company. This big fella was no more than 10 feet away for the whole time. I watched him catch a little sunfish! Maybe some inspiration for a rainy day...
See it in the store.

68 - Off Wilson Road

A study of the edge of a farm off Wilson Rd... This is on the way to a friend's house.  They've added so much new construction along the way.  Tons of new subdivisions.  I used to drive out there just to clear my head or get to the water when we still had a boat...  They've set aside a bunch of land for forest preserves and even a massive dog park.  So it's not all gone yet!  It seems like they are trying to save enough of the land to keep it peaceful...

66 - Off Route 60

A quick sketch off Route 60.  I've been waiting for the Weeping Willows to start to change for a while now.  Most of the trees in the area are almost bare with the wind we've had this past week or so.  Better find some more time to get out and capture the colors!

54 - Lincolnshire Farm

Welp Fall is coming to Chicago!  Hope I get to capture some of the colors change this year.  This is a quick study of a farm I used to pass every day on the way to school in the morning.  They've since taken out the stop sign and re-routed the road for a traffic light so I rarely pass it any more.

46 - Before the Storm

This was painted from our dock at Long Lake.  Which also happens to be the name of the town. It's in the Nicolet National Forest and just a gorgeous sleepy town.  They don't even have a stop light.  I had planned to give this one to the owner, but my Dad said no?

I could go on forever about this place as we went a couple times a year from childhood into college.  Fay Lake Resort which is just up the road and used to be owned by John Touchet as well...Is a sight to behold.  The cabins are built out over the water and the fishing/forest are amazing!

Anyway the winds started picking up and the rain began right as I finished.  I made it back to the cabin just before it really came down.  This was when I was still using a french easel in the field.  Im sure a few of you know how long they take to break down.  Whew!
