Sometime before the Dr.
Had some time to kill before the Dr. yesterday. Headed out to the food court for some gestures. Then it was off to Fort Sheridan for a quick gouache sketch. From what I gather, Ft. Sheridan is a reclaimed military base turned residential/forest preserve mix. I have only scratched the surface of what is there... But it's an interesting place.
Sort of ended up using a bunch of media yesterday. Nice to break out of the comfort zone once and a while! Check out my blog for the other sketches from the day. Have a great Thanksgiving!

A Morning in awe!
Not gonna lie... This was hard!
The camera overdoes the saturation I see. Still wish I had a bigger palette.
What an amazing way to spend a morning! Quite literally at the feet of a master! After William-Adolphe Bouguereau!
If you know what painting this was from, please let me know... This image was from a series of details posted by @_artzoom_

Hallway Sketch 1
Been reading the last few days. Online courses really bog you down with text!
Felt great to jusy relax for a late night sketch. Clear my head! Been trying to figure out how to add a figure in this... Maybe take a higher view point?
Instagram cropped it a little no matter what I did.

Tether study
Had a more than a few minutes bedore I had to kick off the day this morning. Still breaking in the new box, palette and design... Zorn palette again. Getting closer to nailing down the pose for this one... Will definitely need a few good studies of people in the mask... It confuses me. Oil on panel 8" x 6".
Just for fun a curious little fella that was keeping an eye on me looking for reference material last weekend should you choose to swipe... 😜 what is it? A baby is assume 🕵

Sketchbook assignment
A sketchbook assignment from a class I'm taking... Weird to be drawing on white paper again and not really working with a whole space.
It was tricky to keep the same head tilt and angle looking back and forth. Fun stuff though! Great to just show up and see what happens sometimes!

Bud Vase and Walnut with Rose
In keeping with my post vacation boot camp. Another bud vase. Haven't painted a walnut in years... They always remind me of little brains. I swear the rose is just the slightest bit green too. I guess that's what she meant when she said we kind of have white sprays available...
More soon.

Buffalo Creek Bridge Study
Well this one almost never happened. I went by this spot early in the day and was unhappy with the light... So I started scouting out new places to paint waaay north. It started pouring so I headed back home. By the time I got back the rain had cleared, but I was exhausted!
Came in had a couple cups of coffee, and forced myself out the door to check on it again. I liked the light, and there wasn't too much standing water. So I set up and painted...
Getting everything back to the car in the wind was tricky, but I made it. Proceeded to tuck the painting away safely and got in the car... I reached back for a paper towel for one last wipe of the hands. Turned out they blew out of the car! A whole brand new roll was flowing across the parking lot. In a huff I managed to bundle them all back up... So now I'll be using the bundle around the studio... It's always and experience dealing with nature.

Buffalo Creek Study
A quick study of a bush and some wildflowers from Buffalo Creek forest preserve. They've had the park shut down since the middle of last year. There's still only a couple of paths open. But I was lucky enough to stumble upon this bush. Thought it would make for a nice composition with the wild flowers.
I'll go back and explore the ponds and bridges later this year. When I have more energy. But, it was fun seeing what may be in-store for this park. It's just a quick drive away and always full of fisherman, walkers and bikers...

84 - Willow off Route 60
I went into work early today so I could try to get a painting in. Another quick sketch of the Weeping Willow by the Rustoleum building off route 60. This was fun! Completely different than it was in the fall... See here.
And this time I had some company. This big fella was no more than 10 feet away for the whole time. I watched him catch a little sunfish! Maybe some inspiration for a rainy day...

Laundromat 2 and new blog location!!!
You guessed it. Another early Saturday at the Laundromat. This time my mother stood in for me. I've included an early stage of the block in... Thought it was interesting to see what stayed and what changed. My panel was a little wetter than usual to start so most of the drawing faded away. But I had what I needed.

New blog location - https://www.edwatsonsmallworks.net/blog
With the new blog is a new gallery and store! I'll be adding some new things that didn't seem to fit here. If you have a chance, check out the site. I'd love to hear what you think!

Ma surprised me by taking a day off to go see the Bouguereau exhibit in Milwaukee! (Bouguereau and America) How exciting! I may finally get to see on of my favorite paintings of his!?! Don't want to jinx it... as I passed it twice on an east coast tour a number of years ago... Closed both times!

72 - Sketch of Ira
Haven't posted in a while... Been really busy and at the tail end of a cold. We're finally back in the double digits here! So, I'm hoping to sneak out for some winter scenes the next few nights.
Anyway, this is a quick sketch of Ira. My brother from another mother. This was one of the first sketches I painted when I got home in September. Done from a photo. It's a bit of a caricature of sorts... Thankfully he has a good sense of humor! Maybe you can talk him into sitting for the real thing!
